FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GARDEN SCREENS

What are the prices of the Kokowall and Bamboowall standard screens?

You can request the prices of the standard Kokowall and Bamboowall garden and privacy screens through our website form or by asking one of the international dealers. These screens can also be ordered in all other narrower and lower sizes without extra costs.

What is the difference between garden screens and XL privacy screens?

Garden screens are understood to mean all screens with a maximum width and height of 200cm. These panels are supplied in a framework of galvanized 1.25mm U-profile and can be shortened to every desired size (both width and height) for a small surcharge.
XL privacy screens are understood to mean those screens that are wider and/or higher than 200cm. These screens are supplied in a framework of galvanized 2mm U-profile and are also available in any desired height (max. 220cm) and width (max. 250cm). In order to save on poles and installation time (+ costs), a width of 250cm is usually observed.

What are the prices of the KokoHusk garden screens?

You can request the prices of the KokoHusk garden screens through our website form or by asking one of our international distributors.
These screens are generally only available in standard sizes, but you can easily make them to size yourself using a wire cutter. Closing dimensions can however be supplied (for a small surcharge). These KokoHusk screens are supplied completely filled .

What is the delivery time of the garden screens?

The delivery time depends on the number of orders and method of transport, but the following generally applies.

Standard garden screens: approx. 3 weeks.
Customised garden and XL privacy screens: approx. 3 to 4 weeks.
Noise barriers: approx. 4 to 5 weeks
Large projects: delivery time in consultation

Can JB poles be used also in combination with XL privacy screens?

Yes, JB poles can also be used up to a screen height of 200cm for the Kokowall XL Privacy Screens. We supply the poles in the sizes L=270 or L=290cm. If required, we can also shorten these for use with screens lower than 180cm. For a screen height greater than 200cm we advise using the galvanized steel IPE poles.

Which poles do you advise? Hardwood or steel poles.

This is entirely up to you with the garden and XL privacy screens. We advise casting the poles in concrete for extra sturdiness.

Should the screens ‘rest’ on the ground, or can they also be placed above?

The screens can be placed both directly on the ground and a little bit above.

Are the screens resistant to cat claws?

Cat lovers have regularly asked us this. We have never received any complaints or comments regarding this after a noise barrier has been delivered, so we assume that they can withstand cat claws. Should anything happen to your screen, the coconut tubes can be easily exchanged.

Are the screens resistant to birds and other animals?

As no loose fibres protrude (both sides are clamped within steel frames) it is not tempting for birds and other animals to pull the fibres off the screens. The coconut is wrapped very tightly around the plastic tubes with 14 individual synthetic threads, making it very difficult for animals to pull out bunches of fibres. We have not yet had any bad experiences with this.

Where can I look at the garden screens?

For an address near you where a noise barrier, garden screen or privacy screen has been installed, please feel free to contact us or an international dealer by email or telephone.

Are doors also available?

Yes, doors are available for every type of screen. There are doors with a cylinder lock or with a gate latch. The standard width of a Kokowall and Bamboowall door is 90cm. Maximum width of a Kokowall door is 120cm. Doors can be installed between both steel and hardwood poles.

Are the barriers available in all sizes?

Yes, the screens can be made to an accuracy of 0.5cm. For the garden screens a maximum width and height of 200cm applies. For the privacy screens the maximum width is 250cm and the maximum height is 220cm. When higher screens are required, the panels can be stacked.

How much play must I allow for the poles in between?

When you tell us the size of your garden and which poles you wish to use, we can give you a personalised obligation-free quote / layout plan.

Can I shorten the screens myself?

Yes, the garden and privacy screens can be shortened quite easily. The tools required: Carpenter’s pincers, blind rivet pliers and some blind rivets, drill and a grinder or a metal saw.

Are the frameworks of the panels available in various colours?

For a surcharge we can supply the frames powder-coated in any desired RAL colour. For further information regarding this, please feel free to contact us.

Can the coconut be kept in the same colour for longer?

The colour of the coconut can be kept for longer or the coconut can be made darker again by treating it with garden stain. The garden stain can easily be sprayed onto the coconut using a plant spray. We unfortunately do not stock garden stain amongst our product range, but you can easily buy this from your local timber yard or home improvement centre.

Can the screens be installed in such a way that the coconut tubes are horizontal?

No, the screens have to be installed in such a way that the coconut tubes are positioned vertically.

Can the garden screens also be combined with mesh?

The garden screens can be combined with galvanized steel mesh to give an attractive result. Refer to the various photos on this site. For the wooden poles mesh can be bought separately which can then be mounted on the poles. We can also make mesh panels for which the same frame is used as for the garden screen panels. In such a way mesh panels can also be installed very easily using steel poles. We also have panels available with coconut tubes and steel mesh on one side.

NOISE BARRIERS

How well do the noise barriers work?

Our Kokowall (Lite) and Noise-Reducer noise barriers have been tested in the Delft-based Dutch testing institute TNO and have a sound insulation of 30dB.
The Kokowall (Lite) noise barriers have been shown to fall within the highest category for sound insulationCat. B3-EN1793-2. The BambooWall noise barrier has a sound insulation of 25dB.

In practice it is important that the right height of noise barrier is chosen. This is different in every situation and depends on various factors such as the distance of the noise barrier from the noise source (road, neighbours) and the distance of the barrier to the place where the sound level has to be insulated the most. The ground level of the various areas also plays a role.
If you wish to receive advice regarding your own particular situation, you can come to us for an obligation-free quote for a noise barrier.

Is the sound absorption of a noise barrier also important for shielding against noise?

No, sound absorption only relates to the reduction of the reflection of the noise which comes against the barrier back to where it came from.
A noise barrier with a high absorption  therefore means that of the sound that comes against the barrier less sound is reflected back to the sound source.
This however says nothing about the degree to which the screen shields against noise  (insulates). In your garden behind the screen only the sound insulation is important for you; this indicates the degree to which the screen actually shields you from any noise.
The Kokowall noise barriers do however have a good absorption of 7dB on the coconut side thanks to the uneven surface.

For noise barriers placed around equipment or machines that produce noise it is often important that they do have a good absorption, so that the noise does not go bouncing back and forth between the noise barrier and building against which the machine has been placed.
Kokosystems has various types of noise barriers with an extra high absorption for this use.
And of course these screens also have a high insulation value of 30dB.

What are the prices of the noise barriers?

Prices for noise barriers are upon request. When you are interested in a noise barrier you can request a quote by telephone, email or via our website. You will then be sent a detailed quote with a full materials specification. If appropriate we will pass on your request to the nearest dealer in your country.

What is the delivery time of the noise barriers?

The noise barriers are all sent on after having been made at our own factory in Poeldijk, the Netherlands.
The delivery time of the noise barriers is: approx. 4 to 5 weeks.

The noise barriers are transported on a pallet by an international haulier. If desired, a portable forklift truck can also be sent with the barriers so that they can be unloaded by machine.

What is the life of our Kokowall (Lite) noise barriers?

The barrier that has been erected the longest was installed approx. 15 years ago. The barrier is still in perfect condition. Coconut fibre is very tough, comparable with tropical hardwood. Coconut fibres do however fade in colour due to the sun (as does hardwood). This happens, however, very gradually and slowly so you will not find this annoying. What’s more, we wrap a thick layer of coconut around the tubes so that if the outer layer of coconut breaks open due to the weather, a new, fresh layer of coconut appears. In addition, the Kokowall screens have an ideal surface for climbing plants. Once they are overgrown with climbing plants the screens are no longer subject to the influence of the weather, which helps to increase their life. We therefore advise you to allow climbing plants to grow on your Kokowall noise barrier. The frames of the panel are always made of galvanized steel, which gives the frames a very long life as well.

Does Kokosystems install noise barriers as well?

We do not install noise barriers outside the Netherlands. For this, please contact one of our international distributors or a local contractor.
You can, of course, take care of the installation of the noise barrier yourself. A detailed installation manual can be downloaded here.

Which poles do you advise? Hardwood or steel poles.

Only steel IPE poles can be used for noise barriers, as only these poles (H-shaped) achieve an airtight construction between pole and panel. We do advise, however, casting the poles in concrete for extra sturdiness.

Should the screens ‘rest’ on the ground, or can they also be placed above?

By the noise barriers earth should be added up to the lower edge of the screen. This is to avoid any gaps through which sound can penetrate.

Are doors also available?

Yes, for the noise barrier we can supply a door with a cylinder lock in the same system.
The standard width of a Kokowall Lite, Noise-Reducer or Bamboowall door is 90cm. Maximum width of a door is 120cm.
For the double noise barrier we can supply a Meranti hardwood door in wooden frame or Aluminium door.

Are the barriers available in all sizes?

The maximum width of our noise barriers depends upon the project in question. The maximum height of a noise barrier panel is 250cm, but these panels can be stacked up to a screen height of, e.g. 6m!

How much play must I allow for the poles in between?

When you tell us the size of your garden and which poles you wish to use, we can give you a personalised obligation-free quote / layout plan.

What is the life of the bamboo canes?

The bamboo canes will after some time become duller and lighter in colour due to the influence of the weather. After a while they may also split vertically. The screens behind will, however, retain their natural look. If desired, you can treat the screens with a transparent varnish to give the bamboo canes extra protection and to rejuvenate the old colour and gloss.

Can the noise barriers also be combined with transparent sections?

The noise barriers can be combined with transparent noise barrier panels to give a beautiful result. These panels can be made as option of a galvanized steel frame, the same as the noise barriers, with a laminated & layered PMMA sheet.

What about the fire safety of the screens?

The Kokowall noise barriers are impregnated with the environmentally-friendly fire-resistant Firestop.
